RECOVER
Domain overview
The RECOVER substudy was introduced in the ABCD 7.0 data release to capture information related to COVID-19 infection, recovery, and longer-term health outcomes. Data were collected at a dedicated RECOVER event (ses-REC) with an independent event structure.
Caregivers completed separate questionnaires about the youth and themselves assessing COVID-19 infection history, symptoms, physical and mental health, health care utilization, and social determinants of health. In addition, antibody testing was conducted using at-home collection kits.
Data included in this section originate from the RECOVER study (Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery), a national initiative focused on understanding, diagnosing, preventing, and treating Long COVID.
Thorough documentation for the RECOVER study is available here and should be considered the primary reference for study design, measures, and interpretation. The documentation provided here is specific to ABCD implementation and is intended to support integration with ABCD data structures and workflows.
During data collection, RECOVER variable names were used in REDCap so name_redcap field names, provided in the data dictionary align with the RECOVER data dictionary. In the released ABCD data, variables have been renamed according to ABCD naming conventions (see Variable Naming Conventions.
Youth tables
Antibody Test Results [Youth]
The results of SARS-CoV-2 antibody testing. A small sample of capillary blood was drawn at home using the Tasso device on the upper arm (or thigh, if necessary) and sent to the RECOVER central lab for testing.
Notes and special considerations: There may be discrepancies between test results and survey answers due to staggered timing of administration. Participants received the survey link immediately upon consent, whereas the Tasso order was placed at that time and arrived at a later date. Additionally, the participant may have delayed taking the Tasso test for a period of time. Some Tasso devices malfunctioned, leading to the administration of second, and on occasion third, tests. Initial Tasso devices received hemolyzed by the lab were indicated for retesting. However, later on in the study, the lab determined hemolyzed tests were suitable for testing and resulting. As such, some participants may have more than one result.
Parent tables
Antibody Test Results [Parent]
Provides relevant information regarding antibody test process and results using the Tasso m20 device.
Notes and special considerations: The data differentiates between antibody types. “S-type antibody” refers to antibodies typically generated in response to the COVID vaccine, whereas “N-type antibody” typically refers to antibodies generated in response to COVID infection. However, there are instances in which the self-report data and antibody data are not in alignment.
