6.1 data release

Overview

The 6.1 data release addresses data-related and other minor issues from the 6.0 data release. All 6.0 data release notes remain available, and researchers working with 6.1 data should review both the 6.0 and 6.1 notes to ensure they have all relevant information, as this page only covers updates specific to the 6.1 data release. Although the sample is the same across both releases, several updates were made to the data and data dictionary. Below are diff files showing all metadata changes as well as an overview of the data changes made in the 6.1 release. Detailed information about data level changes made in the 6.1 data release are available in the internal release notes, which are available to authenticated users on the NBDC Data Hub.

For details about the dataset’s curation and structure, which were updated ahead of the 6.0 data release, please refer to the Curation & structure documentation page. A general overview of the curation, structure, and release dataset is available below.

Sample

The 6.1 data release includes the same sample of participants and events as the 6.0 data release.

The 6.1 data release includes data from 11,868 participants, representing the full ABCD cohort (N = 11,880) except for 12 participants who withdrew consent to share their data, and 13 events. Data are considered complete through the 4-year follow-up and nearly complete for the 5-year follow-up, with varying numbers of missed visits per event. The 5.5-year and 6-year follow-up events were still ongoing when the data were frozen (cutoff date: January 15, 2024), so these events include only participants who had assented by the cutoff date. No data are included from events after the 6-year follow-up to ensure sufficient event completion.

The following table shows the number of participants per core study event1:

Session/event ID Session/event label n
ses-00S Screener 11868
ses-00A Baseline 11868
ses-00M 0.5 Year 11389

ses-05A 5 Year 8885

The ABCD 6.1 data release also includes data from associated substudies—Social Development, Endocannabinoids, Hurricane Irma, COVID-19, and MR Spectroscopy. Some of these substudy assessments are done during the same visits as the main study, others have their own, independent event structure.

The following table shows the number of participants with data per substudy event:

Core domains

ABCD (General)

Household income scores levels labelling error fixed

A levels labeling error was identified in summary scores in 6.0 data. This error has been corrected in the ABCDscores package and the levels table is now corrected in the 6.1 data release.

  • ab_g_dyn__cohort_income__hhold__3lvl
  • ab_g_dyn__cohort_income__hhold__6lvl

Response labels were incorrectly assigned:
- 777 = Don't know
- 999 = Decline to answer

They should have been assigned, and are now correctly assigned in the 6.1 data:
- 777 = Decline to answer
- 999 = Don’t know

If you are using summary score data downloaded from the 6.0 data release, please reassign levels labels accordingly.

ABCD Dynamic Variable Labels

Variable labels were updated to be more accurate across a variety of items in the ab_g_dyn tables.

Site Transfers

Site ID, ab_g_dyn__design_site, was corrected for 2 participants with site transfers that had been missed in the 6.0 data release.

Friends, Family, & Community

Values Scale Summary Scores

The familism subscale scores were missing in the 6.0 data release and have been added to the fc_y_vs and fc_p_vs tables.

Genetics

Genetic Relatedness Matrix

The genetic relatedness matrix has been added to the file-based data. The corresponding changes have also been documented on the Genetics documentation page.

Mental Health

Brief Problem Monitor

There was an issue with the mh_y_bpm and mh_t_bpm t-scores due to an incorrect mapping table being used in the 6.0 data release. The mapping table and t-score data have been corrected in the 6.1 data release.

Family History

Variable labels were updated to be more accurate in the mh_p_famhx__halluc subscale to reflect the inclusion of both hallucinations and delusions in these items.

Neurocognition

Emotional Stroop Task

Reaction time summary data were corrected based on the removal of two extreme outliers in the Emotional Stroop Task nc_y_est table.

NIH Toolbox

The dtt and age variables were removed for the nc_y_nihtb__comp subscales as those scales are not their own task, but rather combination scores of other tasks in the NIH Toolbox and thus do not have their own unique time of administration.

Physical Health

Medications Inventory

The variables ph_p_meds_001__v01 and ph_p_meds_001__v02 were collapsed into a single variable in the dataset due to congruency of the items.

Anthropometrics

The levels values in the ph_p_anthr__height were remapped such that if a participant selected the response option “5 feet” that value is now coded as a 5 in the dataset whereas in 6.0 the values did not directly correspond in this way.

Munich Chronotype Questionnaire

The algorithm in ABCDscores for the ph_y_mctq summary score items ending with __sleep__mid__24_t was updated. Subsequently Relative Social Jet Lag, Absolute Jet Lag, and Chronotype scores were affected by these changes and were re-calculated with the updated values of the corrected scores.

Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children

Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDS) summary scores have been added to the ph_p_sds table.

Substance Use

Timeline Followback

All scores in the su_y_tlfb table using the “past 3 months” __3mo time frame were corrected to properly account for 90 days from the time of administration rather than the 60 incorrectly used in 6.0 data.

Imaging Data

Changes to task fMRI behavioral performance and inclusion flags for SST (stop signal task)

The behavioral performance flag for SST (mr_y_tfmri__sst__beh__qc_indicator) has been changed from 0 (fail) to 1 (pass) for 3524 participant-events. The criteria for acceptable behavioral performance for SST were adjusted to allow for as few as 280 “Go” trials instead of the previously required 300 Go trials. This change was made to allow for the inclusion of participant-events in which the SST runs contained “Stop too early” (STE) trials, which are defined as trials in which the participant made their button press response during a stop trial before the stop signal would have been presented. In the version of the SST task used since August 2021, when STE trials occurred, the stop signal was then not presented on that trial, and the subsequent trial was replaced by another “Stop” trial, thus reducing the number of Go trials. Of all participant-events with SST behavioral results in the 6.1 release, ~85% of participant-events have exactly 300 Go trials and over ~96% have at least 295 Go trails. For time series modeling, STE trials are currently modeled as a separate condition of no interest. In the upcoming 7.0 release, STE trials will be recoded as Go trials.

As a consequence of the change to the behavioral performance flag noted above, the imaging inclusion flag for SST (mr_y_qc__incl__tfmri__sst_indicator) has also been changed from 0 (exclude) to 1 (include) for 3152 participant-events. Note that this number is less than the number of participant-events with changed performance flag due to additional reasons for exclusion.

ABCD-BIDS Community Collection (ABCC)

The ABCD-BIDS Community Collection (ABCC) has been updated as well. To learn more, see the ABCC documentation.
